and egos, i just won election. i am going to win the primary and sign on the stimulus and obama will stay out -- from against me. within two months he was unelectable all the spending issue. not the tax issue but spending. the pig in the python, a freshman class that came in in 2010, with spending ringing in their ears. they are going to be focused on spending the way got elected 20 or 40 years ago were not -- reagan, texas, got it. regulations, got it. spending in general, but as a vote moving issue, it was. that is what is very shocking. and then ryan comes in -- i consider the ryan played to be all about spending, entitlement reform. bring spending down to 60% of gdp. obama's plan takes 38. the ryan plan versus the obama into the future -- although the obama thing and eventually blows up and get aspics' because he cannot calculate that amount of debt and what it would do to the country. the ryan plan is all about reforming entitlements suspending of the smaller percentage of gdp rather than a larger percentage.

the election. i think the writing was on the wall, and i and many others kept saying before the election that we had a problem with immigration. and i know that after this election there would be a lot of introspection and analysis of how to get the latino vote. but at the end to me it was the latino vote or romney not proceed veiling precisely because of the latino vote and specifically because of the issue of immigration. if governor romney would have had a more constructive view on it from the git-go, he would have been a more competitive candidate and frankly at the end he would have ended up prevailing in the election. he didn't win, contrary to apparently what he thinks, not because latinos voted for obamacare or entitlements, they just didn't like him because of the things he said about immigration. you remember what he said, people should self-deport. sounds something very similar to what chris could vac would say, the secretary of state of kansas, who was one of the co-authors of the arizo

then the election can, and i am proud of that too. everybody stay sober? it really was a culmination for us. we had taken over -- in charge of a cbs news one year and a half ago. these big stories happened. that is a priority of our organization. when a big story happens, we are ready to jump on a dime, including the petraeus story, and that is as big as it gets. to cover it in a way that helps the viewer better understand it stores of our day. to me that really says thatin a nutshell. we are approaching a story in a smart way, it focused way that helps people better understand what it is that is happening in the world. i want to talk a little bit about -- because so many of you will be heading out into the world about my own beginnings, which are very different. i am envious of this because i knew i wanted to be in the news business. i love the storytelling and i loved it venture. i did not know anybody in the news business. i was very lucky one month out of college and got a job in my home town of boston at a telephone -- television station. they needed

and we saw the results in the 2012 election. this did not cause president obama the election, it probably helped him. he had a healthy margin of victory of the popular vote. his margin was larger than his larger -- that his margin of victory. there are lots of groups you could say it about, but is also true of lesbian and gay voters. the issue almost certainly helped president obama and did not hurt president obama. the lesson is not lost on the republican party. here are my concluding thoughts. it is a complicated history to were the long road of marriage equality, the beginning is a complicated answer about backlash and the popular analysis of what is going on politically. what i want to conclude with, this has been neglected by the backlash theorists, how the courts have advanced marriage equality. i think there have been three things about what the courts have done. from my point of view, the most important is a fantastically important setting for capabilities. the word marriage in our vocabulary only meant different sects.

i got into education reform largely because as an elected official in washington, d.c. i would visit schools and talk to teachers. after i was elected for the first time in 1993, i would go to school and see a couple of these bright eyed kids in some of these low income communities. troubled, challenge neighborhoods. troubled, challenged schools. i said, what is that kid's story? the teacher would tell me. the kid seemed to be so energetic, so bunch potential. -- so much potential. a couple years later, i hear he got dropped out. that kid never could read. it struck me when i looked at the negative social indicators in washington, d.c. -- similar to other countries around the country -- all the negative social stuff was directly related to the lack of education. 90% of the inmates in d.c. were high-school dropouts. in terms of homelessness, joblessness, drug addiction -- there are statistics out there now that if we increase the high-school graduation rates in this country by 10%, we reduce the murder rate by 20%. all of these indicators show that there is nothing more
